ONE desperate six-year-old tried to obtain concert tickets by claimingher father had died in Iraq (he hadn't). A ten-year-old leapt at theprospect of telling your correspondent how much she loved Hannah'smusic and clothes, even if she had never heard of The Economist. “Daddyreads it; we don't,” her mother admitted. Tickets to the sold-out showsfetch $3,000 on the secondary market, a steep price for the targetaudience: girls aged six to 14.

The television series that began the crazeexplicitly says ordinary life as a teenager is preferable to popularindulgence as a celebrity, a message reflected in the real-life storyof Miss Cyrus, the dark-haired daughter of country singer Billy RayCyrus, who insists her parents do not let her get away with much andwho dons the blonde wig in real life when she sings on stage. Parentsand young girls (though not, it seems, boys) like Hannah's dress anddemeanour and revel in her dual role.

The film had its run extended. Oneepisode of the television series claimed a record audience for basiccable of 10.7m last summer. American girls may be obsessed withcelebrity, but they are no less fascinated by themselves.
